In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain to the Bahamas by accident. Columbus said that the world was so small that you could sail all the way from Spain to Asia. That was a long way to go and they did not know that they would make it to Asia, but they would go to the Bahamas. They stopped at the Canary islands right off the coast of North Africa to re-supply and fix one of their ships. After that, they went sailing the ocean blue for six weeks straight with stale bread and fish. The men also had near to no sleep as well as almost no water. Before the trip, the queen of Spain sent a bag of gold with the crew to give to the first person who saw land. A man on the look for land said he saw land but it turned out to be a dead whale floating. Columbus was furious because the crew thought their journey was over but it wasn't. More weeks went by of sailing and finally, A crew member said"I found land" and Columbus had come up from the bunks and said no I found land this morning before everyone but I did not want to wake you guys up.
In the article, Columbus gets all kinds of captains and crews to man the ships on the long journey to Aisa. They travel down the coast of Africa and to the most southern part of Spain the Canary islands. They thought that this would be a gold place to stop to get water food and regroup and be ready for the long haul ahead. They also needed to repair one of their ships there. On the way, they had two ships with rectangular sails and one with a triangular sail. The problem with that is that the two rectangular ships were going a lot faster than the other ship and they got a few days behind schedule. The reason they brought the triangular sailed ship is that of the way they will get back they can't get back with the rectangles but they can with the triangles.
